Furniture Design Description
During my design degree we were asked to design and develop a piece of furniture. The mild steel element had to be made by a professional in the industry and was to be sufficiently specified. A combination of either plywood or macrocarpa, alluminium or mild steel and an apolstery element were the selected materiality that was to be used. This piece was developed around the idea of the furniture being used as a form of display.
The furniture I constructed was based on the idea of replicating the geometric form of packing crates.
Rough stecils that are generally used for crates were developed further and created a more sophisticated imagery. Contrast was formed with the steel element comparitively holding little volume, unlike the adjacent wooden leg. Five layers of gloss polyurethane were applyed to contast the industrial look of packaging crages. I made cushions from fabric which was then spray painted with a smaller version of the stencil used on the table top to add a softer, fun element to the geometric form.
